Privacy
What we collect, what we do not, and what stays yours.
Who this is
imloka is the data controller for the information described here. Questions or requests go through Contact; content-related complaints go through our IT Rules-compliant Grievance channel on that same page.
What stays private
Your saved stories, your following list, your reading history, your notifications, and your email address are private. They are never included in a public payload, regardless of any profile setting.
Reading history
Reading history is yours, reader-controlled, and clearable at any time. It is kept separate from operational analytics: one is a record for you, the other is a measurement for us.
Information you give us
Account details (email, display name), anything you write to us (a pitch, a correction, a comment, a grievance), and, if you subscribe, your email address for the newsletter. None of it is used for anything other than the reason you gave it to us.
Information we collect automatically
Standard server logs (IP address, browser, pages requested) for security and to keep the site running. We instrument semantic events (an article opened, a search submitted) rather than inferring meaning from what you clicked. Personalisation data and operational analytics are separate systems and are not joined.
Cookies and similar technology
We use four kinds of cookie:
- Strictly necessary: keeps you signed in, remembers your theme. Cannot be switched off; nothing here identifies you to a third party.
- Preferences: remembers things like your language edition and reading settings.
- Analytics: aggregated, anonymised traffic measurement.
- Advertising: used by our advertising partners to serve and measure ads, and to avoid showing you the same one repeatedly. These partners may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this or other websites.
Preference, Analytics, and Advertising cookies are off until you say otherwise. The first time you visit, you choose what to allow; you can change your mind at any time from "Privacy choices" in the footer. You can also opt out of personalised advertising generally through the Digital Advertising Alliance or Your Online Choices (EU/UK): both cover participating networks generally, not any one provider.
Who we share information with
Service providers who keep the site running (hosting, email delivery, and, where enabled, advertising partners) under contracts that limit what they can do with it. We do not sell your personal information, ever.
How long we keep it
Account data for as long as your account exists, plus a short window after deletion in case of error. Server logs roll off automatically. Reading history stays until you clear it.
Your rights
Under the GDPR (EEA/UK readers) and India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023: access what we hold, correct it, ask us to delete it, restrict or object to processing, take your data elsewhere, and withdraw consent at any time, without it affecting anything you did before withdrawing. EEA/UK readers can also complain to their local data protection authority. Reach us through Contact; grievances specifically go to our named Grievance Officer.
Children
imloka is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13 (16 in the EEA, where applicable).
Security
We are committed to keeping your information secure, using standard technical and organisational safeguards to prevent unauthorised access or disclosure. No system is perfectly secure, and we will tell you if something goes wrong.
Changes
We will update the date below when this changes, and flag anything material. This policy is effective from August 2026.
